Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbal medicine is built off of the five elements: fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) revolves around the belief that everything, including the organs of the body, consists of these five elements. Beyond that, another traditional Chinese belief is that everything also has a Yin and Yang: that every living thing consists of two opposing forces of energy.

Chinese herbal treatments are focused on balancing particular parts of the body with herbs consisting of different properties. From sweet and salty to bitter, sour, or pungent, these Chinese herbs are classified into tastes inspired by the five elements.

For example, recommendations revolving around skin usually consist of a pungent herb, because the skin organ itself is considered a metal element.
